The other half . . .

A week ago, I mentioned some "chick flicks" I brought into the marriage. My husband read my list and felt I was being unfair. Quoth he, "By choosing to omit certain films from your list, you unfairly biased them [he means you, dear reader] against me."

So folks . . .  in pursuit of absolute objectivity and fairness, a few flicks from the other half of my video library: the "bro flicks."

One movie has long been a favorite of boyfriends and husbands everywhere, Sense and Sensibility. Watching this movie makes men nostalgic for times past, back when women "knew their place," "wore dresses," and "kept quiet about politics." Scattered through the film are images of horseback-riding, mentions of hunting, and a brief wooden sword fight. Jonathan is always begging to watch this movie. (Hugh Laurie's in it, and he's a staple in "shows guys like." How novel to hear House speak with a British accent!)

Another hit among the guys is the movie While You Were Sleeping. Men really love that the poorer, messier, and "less-academically-driven" brother is unexpectedly the one who ends up with Sandra Bullock. This film is not about the incidental romance. Rather, it's a man's dream come true: it's about trains, eating hot-dogs with only mustard, girls who like eating Oreos, and freezers full of Baskin-Robbins ice cream.

Also, A Room With a View. Men like seeing Daniel Day-Lewis get his comeuppance in movies. For one thing, he's way too cool in every other movie he stars in. Second, he's way too cool in real life - he's a shoe-maker by trade when he's not starring in movies and getting Oscar nominations. In this one he gets dumped pretty hard. This film also features the guy who plays Marcus Brody in Indiana Jones.

I hope you all have a much clearer picture of what it is I really brought into our marriage . . .
